Sun, Salt and ShovelWork is work. A means to earn a living. Does it need to be anything more? Does it really have to be your passion?
Work having to be your passion, or your life's calling seems to be prevalent with knowledge workers (only). There is also an income threshold. If you are in a low income bracket, struggling to put food on the table, do you have the luxury to care or be picky?
I doubt if working in a coffee shop or an assembly line in a factory or a bank is anybody's calling.
You can be good in the work you do. But that is not to be confused with passion.
“Do the work of your calling”, “if the work is your passion, you don’t have to work a day in your life” type narratives are spun by companies wanting to pay you less (the same companies expect you to work more), hooking you with emotional stories and stories of making a difference in the world.
Even with the work that is your calling, if you work for someone else, you can and will be let go without second thoughts. It is just work. You are just a head count.
